Consultancy Services for Conducting Detailed Feasibility Study & Safeguard Policy Study, Detailed Engineering Design & Bidding Services and Construction Supervision Services etc. for Construction of Khulna – Mongla Port Rail Line
The Government of Bangladesh proposed the construction of a 53 km Broad Guage Railway Link between Khulna and Mongla Sea Port in Bangladesh.
The project aimed to enhance the rail connectivity of the rest of the country with the Mongla Port, the second most important and busy sea port in Bangladesh after Chittagong Port. The Chittagong and Mongla Port together handle 90% of the international trade in Bangladesh.
The proposed railway link was aimed to lessen the congestion at Chittagong port and connect Dhaka, the capital city of Bangladesh, with south-west and southern part of the country. It will also enhance the trade and regional connectivity in the South Asian region as well as increase the export and import of Bangladesh. The railway link will help reduce road traffic congestion in Khulna city as well as improve the economic growth of the country. The Mongla port lies next to Sundarbans, the biggest mangrove forest in the world and an eco-sensitive zone.
CEG was empaneled as a consultant to conduct a Feasibility Study and Safeguard Policy Study and assess the economic and financial viability of the project. The study also included fixing a suitable alignment including detailed design of rail line, bridges, stations, yards, signaling, operation and other facilities. The studies also involved conducting Social Impact Assessment (SIA) and Environment Impact Assessment (EIA) to understand the impact of the project on surrounding communities and environment. The construction supervision of the project was also conducted by CEG as part of the project.
